Opis

Description

(EN) The research will focus on the period after the decriminalisation of suicide after 1850, which allowed the shift of focus from punishment to prevention and the transformation of those who would commit suicide from criminals and sinners into patients. Suicide will be presented from the perspective of the medical profession, in particular psychiatry, while the analysis will also encompass the ideas of those who argued for progressive degeneration as well as eugenicists, for whom suicide resulted from hereditary and environmental factors, especially debauchery and alcoholism, which had to be urgently recorded, analysed, and eliminated from the society. Suicide will also be explored from the viewpoint of the Catholic and consequently the bourgeois morality, whose standpoint with regard to suicide was equally obstinate. In accordance with the Catholic doctrine, suicide was seen as the worst of deadly sins. The research will address the phenomenon of suicide according to gender and age, and also present the attitude towards suicide in Slovenia after the Second World War within the socialist reality when it was included in the category of social psychopathology, while those who would commit it were often seen as cowards and traitors who had lost their faith in the socialist future.
