v.d. Department Head: Prof. Dr. Andreja Kutnar
The Renewable Materials and Healthy Environments Research and Innovation Centre of Excellence (InnoRenew CoE) focuses its work on advanced research of renewable materials, especially innovative methods of wood modification, and the development of a new design approach called Restorative Environmental and Ergonomic Design (REED), which integrates natural materials and ergonomic layouts to promote human health and well-being, and sustainable living.
With an international and interdisciplinary team of more than 50 researchers, InnoRenew CoE has participated in over 160 projects worth nearly €12 million, mostly funded by EU sources. Its results include more than 560 scientific publications, several patent applications, and active involvement in the New European Bauhaus. Additionally, with the New European Bauhaus Academy (NEB Academy) and the NEB Academy Pioneer Hub for Sustainable Built Environments with Renewable Materials (NEBAP Hub) activities, it is offering trainings to accelerate the up- and re-skilling of construction professionals.
Key research areas of the department:
- Renewable materials
- Sustainable construction
- Design solutions based on REED
- Digital technologies in construction
- Engineered living materials
Science promotion activities include the hosting of international scientific and professional conferences, publishing open-access scientific articles, and presenting research achievements at international events. Members give invited lectures abroad and teach at master’s and doctoral levels.
