UP Institute Andrej Marušič has been successful in obtaining a new research project within the Public Call for Proposals for the co-funding of research projects under the complementary scheme for applications to European Research Council (ERC) calls, co-funded by the Slovenian Research Agency (ARRS).

Radio Capris is organising their traditional campaign Fridge of Good Heart to help families in need in our region. The cooperation between UP and Radio Capris has been successful for many years, this year we've formed an even stronger connection with the organisation of events for our students (Orientation days and StartUP). As their campaign connects the wider community, all UP members have decided to participate in this humanitarian action.


The Departments of Mathematics of the UP Faculty of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Information Technologies (FAMNIT), and UP Andrej Marušič Institute (IAM), are seeking a top early-career researcher for a postdoctoral position in the area of structural and algorithmic graph theory, in connection with a research grant of Prof. Dr. Martin Milanič "Tree-Independence Number of Graphs" funded by the Slovenian Research Agency (ARRS).

Doctoral thesis defence of Dean Lipovac


Dean Lipovac, student of the doctoral study programme Renewable Materials for Healthy Built Environments UP Faculty of Mathematics, Natural sciences and Technologies (UP FAMNIT) will defend his doctoral thesis Human preference for wooden materials and their role in restorative environments, under the supervision of Assist. Prof. Michael David Burnard.

The defence will take place on Friday, 11 November 2022 at 15:00 in Sequoia (InnoRenew CoE, Izola), and it'll also be streamed via Zoom - the link is available here (Meeting ID: 863 8828 4637).

The thesis will be available in the library at UP FAMNIT in the following days.

Andrés David Santamaría-Galvis, student of the doctoral study programme Mathematical Sciences at UP Faculty of Mathematics, Natural sciences and Technologies (UP FAMNIT) will defend his doctoral thesis On partitionability and shellability of relative simplicial complexes, under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Russ Woodroofe.

The defence will take place on Tuesday, 8 November 2022 at 17:00 in Famnit-MP1 (Glagoljaška 8, Koper), and it'll also be streamed via Zoom - the link is available here (Meeting ID: 840 2318 1429, Passcode: 399720).

The Cycle Around the Globe campaign, organized each year by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP), has seen its most monumental participation to date with over 2,000 participants in over 47 countries cycling to raise awareness for suicide prevention.


On Thursday, 20 October 2022, the Rector of the University of Primorska promoted 11 Doctors of Science who defended their doctoral dissertations between March and October 2022 at a ceremony in the UP Armeria. 307 students have completed their doctoral studies at UP so far.

New Doctor of Science Žiga Velkavrh


Today, on the 20th of October 2022, we welcomed another Doctor of Science at UP Famnit and UP IAM.

Today, 14 October 2022, we successfully concluded the conference MATCOS-22  The Middle-European Conference on Applied Theoretical Computer Science. The two-day event was organized by Andrej Marušič Institute (UP IAM), the Faculty of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Information Technologies (UP FAMNIT) and in cooperation with the research institute InnoRenew CoE.


On Wednesday, 19 October 2022, from 9 AM to 4.30 PM, the Faculty of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Information Technologies (UP Famnit) will host the closing event of the Erasmus+ project GROWTHMINDS in its Lobby (Avla).


The InnoRenew CoE institute and the University of Primorska are organising the InnoRenew CoE International Conference 2022: Rethinking buildings and materials for a sustainable future, hosted from 17–18 November 2022 at InnoRenew's new building in Izola, Slovenia.

Orientation Days UP 2022

With the start of a new semester, the University of Primorska organises the event Orientation Days for all international students. The September events are usually larger and are attended by both full-time students and international exchange students, the Orientations Days in February are predominately attended by exchange students. 

European Research & Innovation Days is the European Commission's leading annual event on research and innovation, bringing together policy makers, researchers, entrepreneurs and the general public to discuss the current situation, plans and to shape the future of research and innovation in Europe and beyond.

6 new ARRS projects awarded to UP

Researchers at the University of Primorska have been successful in obtaining 5 new research projects (four basic projects and one postdoctoral project) within the Public Call for (Co)Financing of Research Projects for 2022 of the Slovenian Research Agency (ARRS). Researchers from UP Famnit and UP IAM will carry out research work in the fields of Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Sciences and Psychology.


Every year we celebrate the World Suicide Prevention Day on the 10th of September, and this year, to raise awareness of the issue in Slovenia, the University of Primorska organised an event in Ljubljana's Cukrarna Gallery. It was aimed at informing the public about the activities on the occasion and to officially announce the hosting of the 32nd World Congress of the International Association for Suicide Prevention, organised next September by the University of Primorska and IASP.

Yesterday, 5 September 2022, the President of the Republic of Slovenia Borut Pahor, officially opened the Woodrise 2022 international congress, which is taking place in Bernardin, Slovenia under the President’s honorary patronage. The InnoRenew CoE and the University of Primorska are organising it on 6-7 September 2022.


On 2 September 2022, we held an event at Cukrarna to inform the public about the activities on the occasion of the World Suicide Prevention Day on 10 September and to officially announce that the University of Primorska will host the 32nd World Congress of the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) in September 2023 - a key event in the field of suicide prevention. It's an honour and a testament to the excellent work of our researchers in the field of suicide prevention who have been working at the University of Primorska since 2011 within the Slovene Centre for Suicide Research at the Andrej Marušič Institute.


The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) is the world's central and largest association of computer and information science professionals. Among the partners of the Slovenian associations ACM Slovenia is the Faculty of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Information Technologies, UP IAM & UP Famnit lecturers and researchers are also part of the organisation.

The purpose of the association is to promote and contribute to the development of computer science and informatics in Slovenia and thus support the professional growth of its members by providing opportunities for a lifelong learning. ACM Slovenia is actively involved in the organisation of competitions to increase interest in the field of computer science and informatics and the creation of educational content among pupils, high school students and university students.

University of Primorska has published a Public Tender for the selection of candidates for the Young Researchers' Training Programme for the year 2022. Five PhD students will do research work with their mentors while studying, and will ultimately obtain a doctorate of science. All mentors were selected through a Public Tender published by the Slovenian Research Agency (ARRS), namely at the Andrej Marušič Institute (UP IAM) and the Faculty of Health Sciences (UP FVZ).

The European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO) will be organised in Slovenia in 2023, with the active participation of the University of Primorska, under the auspices of the Slovenian Association of Mathematicians, Physicists and Astronomers (DMFA Slovenije), and with the support of the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport and the Ministry of Labour, Family, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities.


Researchers and lecturers at UP IAM and UP Famnit, Dr. Martin Milanič and Dr. Clément Dallard, were guests of Dr. Nicolas Trotignon's research group at CNRS, ENS Lyon, France, from the 18th to 22nd of July.


The 17th European Congress of Psychology (ECP2022), organised by the Slovenian Psychologists' Association and under the auspices of EFPA - European Federation of Psychologists' Associations, was held between the 5th and 8th July 2022 at Cankarjev dom in Ljubljana.

A successful 10th edition of the International PhD Summer School in Discrete Mathematics was hosted between 26 June and 2 July. The event is organised jointly by UP IAM and UP Famnit, and is traditionally held the last week of June in Rogla. This year, 65 participants from all over the world had the opportunity to discuss their research work and attend various lectures.

The TRIPLE i: Intuition, Imagination and Innovation in Suicidology conference successfully concluded on Wednesday, 1 June 2022 at the University of Primorska. The two-day event was organised by the Andrej Marušič Institute, Slovene Centre for Suicide Research (UP IAM SCSR) in collaboration with the De Leo Fund Onlus.


We are pleased to invite you to the 13th TRIPLE i conference: intuition, imagination and innovation in suicidology. The conference will be held from 31 May to 1 June 2022 in the Zoom online environment and in person at the premises of the University of Primorska (Meeting room, Titov trg 4, Koper, Slovenia). The event is organised by Andrej Marušič Institute, Slovene Centre for Suicide Research in collaboration with the De Leo Fund Onlus.

Cambridge University Press published the book »Symmetry in Graphs« as part of the series of Cambridge Studies in Advanced Mathematics. The authors, Ted Dobson, Aleksander Malnič, and Dragan Marušič, of this first full-length book entirely focused on symmetry in graphs, are long-time researchers at the University of Primorska.

The books within the series Cambridge Studies in Advanced Mathematics aim at introducing the reader to an active area of mathematical research. As well as being suitable for postgraduate students, the topics covered are also useful for experts and professionals from other branches of mathematics seeking access to research topics.

The Middle-European Conference on Applied Theoretical Computer Science (MATCOS-22) will be held October 13th-14th, 2022 in Koper, Slovenia. The conference is organised by the University of Primorska, Andrej Marušič Institute (UP IAM), and the Faculty of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Information Technologies (UP Famnit) in cooperation with InnoRenew CoE.

MATCOS-22 will be held in conjunction with the 25th Multi-Conference on Information Society, October 10th - 14th, 2022, Ljubljana, Slovenia.

Registration open for WOODRISE 2022

InnoRenew CoE and the University of Primorska are organizing one of the world’s most important conferences in modern sustainable construction. Woodrise 2022 will be held from 6–9 September 2022 in Portorož, Slovenia. Conference registration is now open.


The Faculty of Management, Centre for Development and Knowledge Transfer (UP FM CRPZ) organises competitions for the Best Invention of the University of Primorska within the activities of the project KTT 2.0. In the last 2 years, they helped register and protect the inventions of two UP researchers.

The Departments of Mathematics at UP IAM and UP Famnit were once again successful in the call for proposals launched by the Slovenian Research Agency (ARRS) for co-financing scientific research cooperation between the Republic of Slovenia and the United States of America in the period 2022-2024.


You are kindly invited to the 5th lecture of Famnits' Trips to the Mathematical Universe (Famnitovi izleti v matematično vesolje), entitled »Prime divisibility of binomial coefficients« by Dr. Russ Woodroofe (UP Famnit). The lecture will be held on Wednesday, 23rd March 2022, at 18.00, in VP3 (Lecture hall 3 at Famnit) and will be available also via ZOOM link.


Between the 11th of February (International Day of Women and Girls in Science) and the 8th of March (International Women's Day), the University of Primorska presented women researchers who have achieved important milestones in their research work in the last year.

Among them were also researchers from UP IAM and UP Famnit, who shared their thoughts on the position of women in science.

 

Representatives of the US Embassy in Slovenia were received today by Assoc. Prof. David B. DeVallance, Vice-Rector for Internationalization at the University of Primorska. The guests presented two programmes to students and staff at the Faculty of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Information Technologies.

Between 11 February (International Day of Women and Girls in Science) and 8 March (International Women's Day), we present UP researchers who have achieved important milestones in their research work and their thoughts on the position of women in science in the past year.

InnoRenew CoE celebrated the grand opening of its new building in Izola with a ceremony attended by the institute’s partners and special guests, including Dr. Mitja Slavinec, State Secretary at the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport, Danilo Anton Ranc, Director-General of the Wood Industry Directorate at the Ministry of Economic Development and Technology, and Danilo Markočič, Mayor of Izola.

On Monday, 14 February 2022, the National Council of the Republic of Slovenia hosted a discussion on Cultural Heritage in Development Programs 2021-2027. The discussion was aimed to examine the state of cultural heritage in Slovenia, its involvement in various sectors, and the final initiative for an immediate systemic approach to the developmental understanding of cultural heritage, especially in the protected areas of the old city centers.

Climate change is increasing pressure on the built environment and building sector to transform from a major contributor of greenhouse gas emissions to a central solution. The development of mass timber technology and the use of wood to construct mid to high-rise buildings can serve as a pathway to a more sustainable future, meeting a rapidly growing global urban population needs while decreasing carbon emissions and increasing human health benefits.

A 10-day international teacher-training in the field of Intelligent Big Data Analysis is concluding at the Faculty of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Information Technologies, University of Primorska (UP FAMNIT). The training is a part of the ERASMUS + project ELBA, where highly profiled specialists from universities in Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan are participating. The purpose of this training is to implement a multidisciplinary package of module-based courses for bachelor and master students at the 10 partnering universities in Central Asia.

Between 24 January and 4 February, UP FAMNIT will host a 10-day international teacher training as part of the ERASMUS + project ELBA - Establishment of training and research centers and courses development on intelligent big data analysis in Central Asia.
